Cover of "Gender Slices". A drawing of myself is split into three panels. The first being my forehead in blue. The second is my eyes in purple. The third is my mouth and chin in pink. The title "Gender Slices" is at the top The background is a wave of white, blue and pink, being the trans colours. My name "Jey Pawlik" is at the bottom.

Let me thread you up some TRANS COMICS I’ve worked on over the years!

Gender Slices is my autobio comic that I started in 2016 which became a graphic novel upon it’s completion. I’m currently doing a small HRT Diary follow up!

Pages are up for free at: topazcomics.com/genderslices/vol1  Comic page done in black and white with a simple style. Panel one, a coworker stands next to Jey and says “It’s just hard to get used to calling you Jey.” Panel two, Jey puts a hand out like they’re introducing themself for the first time while saying “What if I reintroduce myself? Hi, my name is Jey and I use they/them pronouns? Nice to meet you!” Panel three, we zoom out to show the coworker and Jey, while Jey asks “Did that help?” and the coworker replies “yeah actually.” Black and white comic with three panels. Panel one, narration reads “Lately,” as a friend tells Jey that “Your voice is deeper!” while Jey smiles. Panel two, a family member looking at Jey says “Your moustache is really coming in!” while Jey smiles, narration over the bottom of the panel reads “Friends and family have been pointing out my changes”. Panel three, a close up of Jey happily holding their face with their hands as we see more moustache hairs on their face. Narration reads “It’s nice to know someone other than myself sees them. It makes it feel more real!”

My one page comic for the “When I Was Me” anthology. A moment between myself and one of my niblings at the cottage. He was quite pleased when I’d told him I did a comic about us! www.quindriepress.com/books/p/wiwm Up on a lake I'm sitting on a paddle board with my six year old nephew. As he's staring off into the distance, thinking deeply about something he asks me "Jey, you're not a girl like mommy are you?" I'm clearly excited to be having this conversation with him and respond "No, I'm not a girl but I'm also not a boy like you or your dad." My nephew thinks about this and says "Okay! And you can still be my first-mate right?". I tell him "Of course, Captain!" where I'm beaming with excitement over his response as we paddle on wards!

My first big anthology was “We’re Still Here: An All-Trans Comics Anthology” (that won a 2019 Ignatz) I’d written this during the limbo period between names and waiting for my new birth certificate. Comic page, a transmasc individual walks through an LCBO (Canada's government owned liquor store). They walk through the aisles lined with wine bottles. Their phone begins to vibrate and we see it's "Theo" with a photo that shows these two are twins. Our protagonist picks up the phone: Hey bro. Yeah, they have it. Anything else? They pause and we do not hear what Theo is saying but it takes our protagonist off guard. They respond: Uh! No, I haven't seen it. They're now very nervous and sweaty but walk up to the cash. Still on the phone they say: When I get home I'll help you look for it. Yeah. Okay. Bye. The cashier deadpan asks: You got ID? Our protagonist looks nervously away and then back to the cashier with a fake smile. They say: Y-yeah! One sec! In their wallet, they have their Ontario Driver's License which shows an old photo that no longer looks like our short haired, sideburned protagonist. The name reads "Diana Jolie Archer" and the sex is "F". However, they pull out a second ID from behind it that looks more like our protagonist and reads "Theodore Joel Archer" with the sex being "M", the implied missing object from the phone conversation. The cashier holds the ID up to our protagonist and okay's it. Our main character sighs with relief as they leave the store with a paper bag. They say: It's only for one more week. As they anticipate their new ID to come in.

Given & Taken is a short fancomic written by @octokracken and might still be one of my favourite comics we’ve done together.

It’s “Jigen is trans and Lupin finds out” the comic.

It’s for sale as a PDF or physical copy https://topazcomics.com/shop/product-tag/given-taken/ Cover of "Given and Taken" with the title at the top of the image. The background is black, there's a rectangle in the middle with an illustration of Lupin holding up a bikini magazine over Jigen's torso, Lupin is confused and Jigen is annoyed. Below the illustration reads "Michelle Parker and Jey Pawlik"

Trans media is important and if you can’t find them from the big corps, remember there’s always indie folks who’re doing the good work! Representation is out there!

I’m cookin’ up some stuff over on Patreon, and my work is ALWAYS going to be queer!

Other things

My November giveaway and any physical orders from my shop have been put on hold due to a Canada Post strike. I stand with our postal workers and will not be crossing the picket line.

MCX was a success this year, thanks to everyone who came out to say hi and buy some books! I felt really inspired being around so many cool artists and hope to do some more conventions next year.

If you’re a Lupin fan, also check out the Lupin Forum I’m back to hosting weekly prompts AND there’s sign-ups open now for our December Advent Calendar event!

Thinking about how to use my newsletter to it’s fullest next year and I want to play around with a comic recommendation section, seasonal coupons, and readjusting comic updates – right now I’m posting Patreon/VIP updates in the newsletter AND individually on social media but what if… I posted less updates on social media?!

I might also do a rebrand for myself, make a new logo/banner/display picture and stuff. It’s been a while!

~~~
Thanks for hanging out with me and listening to my rambles. Talk to you again at the end of December y’all!
