February’s Sketchbook

This month’s sketchbook is up for the Grab Bag tier on Patreon and my VIP Blog

A sneakpeek into some concept art, my hourly comics, caught up on my “Birds I Saw” series and some really fun shoutout requests for the Private Collector gang.

Photography Corner

Colour film photo of a stump growing in a lake in Port Severn with vegetation framing the bottom and right sides of the photo.
I started posting some of my photography here, it’s a hobby I’ve neglected for a long time but have been really enjoying getting back into! Check out those photos here!

Cool Comic Recommendation

Shot & Chaser, by EK Weaver

If you’ve read EK’s previous work TJ & Amal, which is one of my all time favourites and I also highly recommend, you’ll want to check this one out. It’s absolutely gorgeous, heartbreaking, sweet, and very real. The story follows Tre, a photographer, and Olly, a storm chaser, as they hop in Olly’s old station wagon to follow a storm during the pandemic and dealing with the world crumbling around them. EK’s characters always feel so real, like I could just bump into them in real life.

Lupin Zine Preorder Extravaganza

"Things Exchanged: A Lupin III Boudoir Zine" promo image showing three hearts on a pink background. A crop of two illustrations are in the first two biggest hearts, we can see a pinup of Jigen in a cowboy outfit smiling and giving a peace sign, the second shows a pinup of Fujiko leaning her head on a giant Fabergé egg with a smile. Text in the last heart reads "Preorders open! topazcomics.com/shop Paperback $15CAD" In the bottom right corner are two stickers that look like instax photos, one of a pink flowery bra on top of Goemon's sword. The second sticker showing handcuffs, Jigen's hat, Lupin's yellow tie and blue striped boxers. Text reads "Two stickers with every paperback order" "After All These Years Can You Finally Say Who You Are?" cover and back cover in one image. Both are done in a noir detective book cover style with lots of grungy textures in purple, yellow, orange and blue. Text in black on a yellow banner at the top reads "Paperback preorders open @topazcomics.com/shop - $15CAD". The front cover shows Zenigata standing against a wall with his hands in his pockets looking to the left at a gay bar sign glowing behind him. "18+" is in the bottom right corner. The back cover shows a similar set-up but from the perspective of the gay bar sign, we are looking up some stairs to see Zenigata and Jigen from behind as they walk away into the night arm in arm under a bright streetlamp. Text reads "A NSFW Lupin III fancomic, where Zenigata is conflicted about his feelings for other men and unexpectedly meets Jigen at a gay bar." A yellow circle is in the corner showing a sticker of Jigen and Zenigata's hats on top of one another with hears coming off of them. Text reads "All paperback orders come with a sticker"

Three Lupin zines I’ve been working on have preorders for physical copies open AND digital copies are available right now! More details can be found in here, but I am so stoked to get these books out into the world. The three of us worked really hard on our pinup zine Things Exchanged, and Max and I couldn’t be happier with how After All These Years turned out. I hope you’ll read them.

Buy them on the Topaz Shop | Buy the PDFs on Itch.io

Promo image of "After All". Text in black on a yellow banner reads "Digital Download @ jeypawlik.itch.io - $8USD" The image shows two comic pages from the zine. Page 1 shows Zenigata's men searching one of Lupin's hideouts and finding a gay men's porn magazine. One officer asks Zenigata "Inspector. Do we have protocol for handling this?" he looks nervously as he holds up the magazine which shows a nude male model from behind. Page 2 shows Zenigata looking surprised then becoming serious. He says "It's evidence, put it with the rest." A timeskip happens and Zenigata is in a hotel room doing paperwork, he looks serious.

Promo image of "After All". Text in black on a yellow banner reads "Bonus: Chapter 3 has both a transJigen version and a cisJigen version!" The image shows a comic page from the zine twice, but with slight differences, the first showing Jigen wearing a binder and the second showing Jigen wearing a tank top. Jigen takes Zenigata's right hand and presses it up against his own chest, he takes Zenigata's left hand and places it near his own ass. The two kiss deeply on the hotel bed. Jigen leans in and says "That's it, stud."

On The Job

Lupin pops into Zenigata’s office for a surprise. But once he’s there things get a bit out of hand.

Cover illustration of the Lupin III fancomic "On The Job". A black background with a window above the title showing Zenigata from the nose down blushing as his tie is held by Lupin's hand which comes from the bottom of the window.

Comic page from "On The Job", Lupin has been thrown under a desk and his limbs are in an awkward position. Light speechbubbles bubble around him as Zenigata speaks to his commissioner. We see a shot of Zenigata standing behind the desk from Lupin's perspective, him focusing on Zenigata's crotch with a large grin.

The first sketchbook of the year and I’m off to a good start, with a bunch of fun concept art, some Lupin prompts, good shoutout requests and some silly doodles!

Commissions

I’m currently open for commissions and trying out using Ko-fi to process those for me. If you’ve ever wanted some custom art from me, now’s the time! I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to have them open for this year.

Photography Corner

So for the last 2 years I started getting into film photography and thought I’d finally start posting some of those online. This is a just for fun hobby and I’m going to try really hard not to stress about scheduling posts and such.

You can see the other 9 photos over here – and maybe I’ll post them on tumblr or other places as well, we’ll see!

Cool Comics

I thought I’d try something new this year with a comic recommendation every month! I’ll be putting links to these comics in my blog’s side bar too.

Lies Within - BOOK 1

Lacey is a good friend of mine but I’m not starting with Lies Within because of that, I’m starting with Lies Within because you NEED to read it. It’s fun, it’s witty, it’s modern and supernatural. I won’t say too much because I don’t want to give too much away but go read it you won’t regret it!

Ladies of Lupin Zine

I thought I’d posted this already but didn’t! Max and I did a 4 page gay Fujiko comic for the Ladies of Lupin zine which you can still order here: https://ladiesoflupiniii.bigcartel.com/

Profits from this project will be donated to National Network of Abortion Funds

Other things

I finally did a small rebrand, changing up my display picture and banner for the first time since 2025. I have a small moustache now after all!

Max and I will have a garage sale booth at Nerd Market 5 on February 23rd from 12pm-4pm

Happy new years everyone and stay safe!

Updates
Cover of "Gender Slices". A drawing of myself is split into three panels. The first being my forehead in blue. The second is my eyes in purple. The third is my mouth and chin in pink. The title "Gender Slices" is at the top The background is a wave of white, blue and pink, being the trans colours. My name "Jey Pawlik" is at the bottom.

Let me thread you up some TRANS COMICS I’ve worked on over the years!

Gender Slices is my autobio comic that I started in 2016 which became a graphic novel upon it’s completion. I’m currently doing a small HRT Diary follow up!

Pages are up for free at: topazcomics.com/genderslices/vol1  Comic page done in black and white with a simple style. Panel one, a coworker stands next to Jey and says “It’s just hard to get used to calling you Jey.” Panel two, Jey puts a hand out like they’re introducing themself for the first time while saying “What if I reintroduce myself? Hi, my name is Jey and I use they/them pronouns? Nice to meet you!” Panel three, we zoom out to show the coworker and Jey, while Jey asks “Did that help?” and the coworker replies “yeah actually.” Black and white comic with three panels. Panel one, narration reads “Lately,” as a friend tells Jey that “Your voice is deeper!” while Jey smiles. Panel two, a family member looking at Jey says “Your moustache is really coming in!” while Jey smiles, narration over the bottom of the panel reads “Friends and family have been pointing out my changes”. Panel three, a close up of Jey happily holding their face with their hands as we see more moustache hairs on their face. Narration reads “It’s nice to know someone other than myself sees them. It makes it feel more real!”

I have oh so many comics about trans joy over on ohjoysextoy.com/category/jeypawlik and I am so grateful to Oh Joy Sex Toy for giving me so much space to autobio about being trans! Promo image of multiple thumbnails from my Oh Joy Sex Toy Comics. Life drawing class, Gee Whizzard, Navigating Menstruation while Trans, Reminiscing with the WeVive Tango, What If I Said I Liked You?, Shirtless At Last, What’s In a Name?, Growing Up Without Sex-Ed, A Day In The Life of An Erotic Artist, Packer Gear TPR Packer Review, Make Your Own Food, and Headcanons.

My one page comic for the “When I Was Me” anthology. A moment between myself and one of my niblings at the cottage. He was quite pleased when I’d told him I did a comic about us! www.quindriepress.com/books/p/wiwm Up on a lake I'm sitting on a paddle board with my six year old nephew. As he's staring off into the distance, thinking deeply about something he asks me "Jey, you're not a girl like mommy are you?" I'm clearly excited to be having this conversation with him and respond "No, I'm not a girl but I'm also not a boy like you or your dad." My nephew thinks about this and says "Okay! And you can still be my first-mate right?". I tell him "Of course, Captain!" where I'm beaming with excitement over his response as we paddle on wards!

My first big anthology was “We’re Still Here: An All-Trans Comics Anthology” (that won a 2019 Ignatz) I’d written this during the limbo period between names and waiting for my new birth certificate. Comic page, a transmasc individual walks through an LCBO (Canada's government owned liquor store). They walk through the aisles lined with wine bottles. Their phone begins to vibrate and we see it's "Theo" with a photo that shows these two are twins. Our protagonist picks up the phone: Hey bro. Yeah, they have it. Anything else? They pause and we do not hear what Theo is saying but it takes our protagonist off guard. They respond: Uh! No, I haven't seen it. They're now very nervous and sweaty but walk up to the cash. Still on the phone they say: When I get home I'll help you look for it. Yeah. Okay. Bye. The cashier deadpan asks: You got ID? Our protagonist looks nervously away and then back to the cashier with a fake smile. They say: Y-yeah! One sec! In their wallet, they have their Ontario Driver's License which shows an old photo that no longer looks like our short haired, sideburned protagonist. The name reads "Diana Jolie Archer" and the sex is "F". However, they pull out a second ID from behind it that looks more like our protagonist and reads "Theodore Joel Archer" with the sex being "M", the implied missing object from the phone conversation. The cashier holds the ID up to our protagonist and okay's it. Our main character sighs with relief as they leave the store with a paper bag. They say: It's only for one more week. As they anticipate their new ID to come in.

Given & Taken is a short fancomic written by @octokracken and might still be one of my favourite comics we’ve done together.

It’s “Jigen is trans and Lupin finds out” the comic.

It’s for sale as a PDF or physical copy https://topazcomics.com/shop/product-tag/given-taken/ Cover of "Given and Taken" with the title at the top of the image. The background is black, there's a rectangle in the middle with an illustration of Lupin holding up a bikini magazine over Jigen's torso, Lupin is confused and Jigen is annoyed. Below the illustration reads "Michelle Parker and Jey Pawlik"

Trans media is important and if you can’t find them from the big corps, remember there’s always indie folks who’re doing the good work! Representation is out there!

I’m cookin’ up some stuff over on Patreon, and my work is ALWAYS going to be queer!
