OJST Behind the Scenes: I Got Married!

OJST Behind the Scenes: I Got Married!

A behind the scenes for you all on this fine Thursday now that I’ve made all my deadlines for my freelance work, I’m going to catch up on Patreon posts!

Like I mentioned in a previous BTS, I was signed on to the Disney Cursed Café game July 2023 but I still had three comics left in my contract with OJST and didn’t want to leave them hanging suddenly. So I just did both at the same time…

While also having gotten married a month prior to all this dropping?!

2023 was a wild year!

The art director for the Disney game actually reached out to me in January 2023 but I had to tell them I wouldn’t be available until July, until after my wedding. Wedding stuff was in full swing, I was doing TCAF and releasing a new book in April (The Dead City Omnibus), and I just couldn’t start a new job during all that. Luckily, the game team wanted me still, so they waited. Then in July I started working on the game part-time, along with doing OJST comics, but I couldn’t keep that up. So this was my last OJST comic before moving full time to the Cursed Café.

But more on THIS comic, I honestly never thought I’d get married nor did it really ever interest me. It all felt so performative when I was younger (the thought of marrying a man really put me off, hmmmmm everything kind of makes sense now). I really wanted to share those sentiments along with how I felt during my wedding.

I designed my first (and maybe only) enamel pins as wedding favours to give to the guests. Which are also up for sale if you’re interested~

Ours was a small wedding, just with close friends and family and even still it was quite a lot of work. I think we did a pretty darn good job because people are still talking about how much they enjoyed it!

And yes, I did cry during it.

I don’t think I ever actually shared any wedding photos online, but gosh looking through them again I’m just so happy we did this.

Because I wasn’t sure if this would be my very last OJST I wanted to make it really special. IN FULL COLOUR ahhhhhhh. It’s not secret to say, but I don’t like colouring. I prefer greyscale or halftones any day of the week, so colouring a comic is always an endeavour for me. But I was determined! Even while working on the Disney game, I wanted this comic to be good and beautiful.

This was when I started experimenting with more textured brushes for colouring, I ended up using some from this set for this comic, before eventually moving on to make my own later.

Thanks for joining me on this wedding journey, Max and I will be celebrating our 3 year wedding anniversary in a week too, so this was well timed~
