Some Ryoko Kui studies from 2021 that I wanted to post now that the manga has wrapped up. Delicious in Dungeon holds a real special place in my heart, and while I haven’t done much/any fanart of it, I have done manga studies!
I’ve done manga studies before in this public post of Monkey Punch studies & one of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou or for Grab Bag tier folks I posted a whole sketchbook of studies!

Some manga studies I did over the summer of a comic I really enjoy “Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou”. It’s about a robot girl who runs a cafe during a sort of quiet apocalypse. It’s a bit older (1994) and is a little bit gay. I absolutely love the art style, the pacing and how slow it is. I highly recommend checking it out if you can. There’s four OVA episodes for it over on youtube. The first two were fantastic but the second two were done in 2006 and weren’t as good.
Manga studies are such a nice way to look at my favourite comics in a different way. How are they panelled? How does the artist pace the story? How do they use B&W to it’s limit?

Zenigata makes good expressions in the show, and therefore I have to draw them and hoard them in my sketchbooks.
Y’know Jigen can still be tough to draw. I’m still not 100% on how I draw his nose so I’ll fill sketchbook pages with screenshot redraws to see if anything will stick. Big thanks to jigencaps for their blog.
One of my favourite past times is doing screenshot redraw sketches as studies. How can I not with this man?!
I just like filling pages with screenshot redraws like this. It helps me keep this man’s face consistent.
An Ulf comic written back in April for a comic study month. For those who don’t know, Ulf is a long-standing OC of ours that we might do something with in the future. But here’s a fun one-shot of him at his job.
Hey also you can get early access to these and other comics over on Patreon!

I did a manga study month a while back and I learned so much by doing these studies. Say what you will about the Lupin III manga, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think Monkey Punch was so good at his craft. He did a lot of great panels and layouts that you just don’t see in modern manga.
The sketchbook of my manga studies can be found over on my Patreon!
