Swim On 2024 Pieces

The pieces I did for the last Swim On zine, which you can still support! It was such a tough decision to stop Swim On after this but it’s gotten so much bigger than I ever expected and I just don’t have enough time anymore to put into it. I may come back to it at some point, but for now 10 volumes was a good place to say goodbye!

Mixed Drinks: Lupin Intro

There is no painting I cannot steal. To keep myself amused I tell people in advance what piece I am coming for, just to watch them fail at their pathetic attempts to stop me. Recently a new inspector has been put on my case. He’s no match for me of course, but he’s loads more fun than the last one. Every time I slip out from under his grasp with the treasure he stands left behind, shaking his fist and yelling “Lupin!” into the night. Panel two, the inside of a bar where Lupin is pouring a drink for Zenigata who’s happily chatting him up. Narration reads “He’s a total goof, so imagine my surprise when one night he shows up at my bar! I thought he had caught on, but it turns out he can’t tell I’m Lupin when I’m not in my costume. Since then he’s been trying to hunt down Lupin every day while coming to visit Arsene every evening. I am still the greatest thief in the world and no painting in Paris is safe from my grasp, but with that dope inpector hounding my every step things are going to get a lot more interesting!”

Okay okay, we don’t normally do this but Max and I are excited to do some fun art for an AU we’ve been thinking about.

I’ll tag this one as Mixed Drinks, but I hope you’re excited for some fun art that’ll occasionally go up on Fridays for this!

It won’t be a full comic, but doodles, illustrations and mini comics all mixed in.

Hourly Comics Day 2024

Black and white hourly comics split into panels by hour. 8am, my alarm goes off. I play Pokemon sleep with my spouse. I put on my T-gel, I have tea and breakfast while reading my RSS feed. 9am, I check my emails and make tasks in Notion. I start sketching my NDA work. Max yells “OH FUCK!” I ask “What’s wrong?” Xey respond “We left the brie out!” I say “Oh no!” as we both look at the sad brie. 10am, my narrative director says “Can you make this pose more intense?” I do sketch revisions, the sketch now has a devilish grin. I grin like the sketch saying “Much better!” 11am, sketching more poses for work and listening to Barry play Chrono Trigger! Barry says “Frog!” from my computer.

This year’s Hourlies are in, hot off the press! This is my NINTH time doing it and I really enjoy putting these together every year.

Lots of Pokemon Sleep and Pokemon Go, watching Barry’s VODs to get me through the work day, Tasting History for lunch, Oh No Ross and Carrie in the evening, and I Can’t Sleep before bed. All of these, I highly recommend watching or listening to!

Coming Out

Young Jigen is startled and unsure of himself, he says “N-no…” Panel two is a big open panel with no borders or backgrounds, it shows a confident young Lupin with his hands on his hips and his eyes closed. He says “I mean my grandpa is into guys too, you know. So I know what’s up!” Panel three is a big wide panel with Jigen in the center from the waist up. He’s blushing and looking down and to the left with his shoulders by his ears, still a bit tense, but smiling now. He says “Uhh, yeah. Okay. Cool.”

An idea I’ve had for a while, even before Zero, but after Zero came out I thought that’d be the perfect way to present the idea.

This page in particular, the dialogue has been floating around in my head for probably well over a year now.

Also testing out TrueGrit’s halftone machine on this comic and… I gotta say y’all, I kinda love it! I’ve been wanting to do more halftone work but haven’t been able to find a look I like or a method that fits well with my workflow.

Family

Panel 3 is an open panel with the two boys sitting together on a wall, Lupin is leaning his head down on Jigen's shoulder. Jigen is blushing and his fists are tight on his knees. Lupin is sad and his arms lay limp between his knees. Speechbubble reads "What if I was your family instead?".

Had this idea back in December. It was originally about Lupin with a black eye, but then then the finale of Zero came out and I liked Lupin’s dad way more than I ever expected! So Jigen’s dad became the jerk of this story instead. My intention for “family” here is “we’re married” and not “we’re brothers”.

Update:
Ohmygosh @rants-about-opm wrote a fic based on this comic and it’s so extremely cute and on point! They really got what I was going for and expanded this 3 panel comic into something really sweet.

Lupin’s Gourmet World Zine Piece: Eggnog

Goemon dialogue: What is this? Lupin dialogue: Eggnog! Panel four, similar panel as to panel three but Goemon is looking concerned at his glass, Lupin is pointing to Jigen angrily, and Jigen is pouring whisky into his own glass. Goemon dialogue: Egg... as a drink. Lupin dialogue: Jigen! There's already run in it!
Michelle and I did a comic for the Lupin’s Gourmet World zine. How it worked was chef’s submitted recipes and an artist got paired up to each recipe to illustrate it. So we got Sel’s eggnog recipe, which I did actually make myself successfully!
