Four black and white illustrations on one image, all done traditionally. "Shoutout for Jonnie" of Chilchuck from Delicious in Dungeon with his arms crossed and looking to the left as he's presumably saying something. "Shoutout for Max" of Darumaka wearing a sailor outfit looking out to the sea while on a ship. "Shoutout for TLC" of their original characters, both in a romantic embrace and one kissing the other on the cheek while the other smiles brightly. "Shoutout for Peggy" of Bilbo teaching a young Frodo how to write, there are papers in front of them on a table.

Four black and white illustrations on one image, all done traditionally. "Shoutout for Jonnie" of Lucky Luke with a piece of grass in his mouth, he's smiling and pushing his hat up with his thumb. "Shoutout for Rett" of Marcille from Delicious in Dungeon as she has a spoon of soup in her mouth, her ears down with a resigned expression, a sparkly speech bubble beside her reads "It's Delicious". "Shoutout for Peggy" of their Dungeons and Dragons character, a cowboy tiefling with a crow familiar. "Shoutout for TLC" of their original characters, two older men smiling with one giving the other a kiss on the cheek.

Eight shoutout requests from my Private Collectors on https://patreon.com/jpawlik and https://jpawlik.com/vipblog which were a lot of fun to do! I love Delicious in Dungeon with ALL MY HEART but I don’t do any fanart for it, so this was nice.

Hey and it’s the beginning of the month, now’s the best time to sign up and get these requests every month plus a huge archive of art and comics, there’s a SFW tier and a NSFW tier~

I also have these shoutouts available as a one-time purchase over on Ko-Fi if that’s more your jam!

Happy May everyone, maaaaay I interest you in a newsletter? My newsletters have all my comic, art, and Patreon updates from the last month!

My newsletters are always free and you can keep up with them here:

Latest Public Arts

I post public art every Friday! Everything is also crossposted to tumblr, mastodon, pillowfort, bluesky and jpawlik.com/blog and up over a month early for all Patrons and VIP members which also include sketches and thumbs with almost every piece.

I also made a SheezyArt and have been enjoying it so far, so my public art will also slowly accumulate there as well.

Webcomic Updates

The Curse Eater pilot chapter continues, we’re nearing the end of this test chapter so be sure to read it for free! The Curse Eater updates every Tuesday.

THE CURTAIN FALLS HAS WRAPPED UP!

I started outlining and thumbnailing Curtains in 2020, then started the art for it in 2022 and now it’s complete! I’m so very proud of it. It was very ambitious for me, because thumbnailing a car chase isn’t quite the same as DRAWING the car chase.

The books have been paid for and are currently in production to be (hopefully) done in time for TCAF on June 7th-8th. Afterwards the PDF and book will be up and available in the Topaz Shop!

For Grab Bag folks I got hit with a bout of inspiration for some HRT Diary comics, so those will be going out every Tuesday for $1+ members for a bit before being available publicly starting in July.

My short illustration series “Lupin & Tits” has wrapped up for Private Collectors AND they also got the latest volume in my Hot & Spicy collection – hey did you know the $10 tier also includes my entire nsfw archive as well?

May’s Sketchbook

This month’s sketchbook is up for the Grab Bag tier on Patreon and my VIP Blog

May’s sketchbook is here! Lots and lots of concept art this month, I’ve got two new comics in the brainstorming stage right now — one that will be a long public webcomic written by me, the other will be a $10 Patreon exclusive nsfw comic written by Max so look out for that! And of course some great shoutouts this month, thank to you the Private Collectors for your support.

Cool Comic Recommendation

Pia & The Little Things by Clover

Pia & The Little Things is such a delightful webcomic with absolutely gorgeous artwork, beautiful illustrations in-between chapters of various bugs, moths, and other little critters, and I’m so excited to see what happens next! It’s very light and slice-of-life with a bits of drama and intrigue sprinkled in.

I had Pia on the mind this month because Clover let me use it as an example in my RSS talk so I just want to sing its praises a bit. Please go read it (and add it to your RSS reader of choice~)

TCAF 2025

Max, Amiel, and I will be tabling under Topaz Comics @ TCAF in the Mattamy Athletic Centre on June 7-8

Because it’s in a new location this year (just a block of College Station) we don’t have a map or booth numbers yet but we will be there selling everything we have available in the Topaz Shop AND MORE!

New things debuting at TCAF!! YEAH!!

– The Curtain Falls, my 70 page Lupin III fancomic about Lupin in his 60s. Every book comes with a free postcard!

– I Built You a Sex Machine, a 20 page NSFW comic written by Max about two older lesbians and a hand made sex machine!!

– Amiel’s Moka Pot zine, a mini zine about moka pots!!!

Hey and just for you newsletter readers, come by the booth for a small gift as thanks for following!

Nib & Ink Fest 2025

May 31st is the last day of the Cartoonist Coop’s big month long online event!

NIF has been so exciting and great to be a part of. I’m on the promo committee for it and spent a lot of this year writing up social media posts for the Coop’s socials to post.

The PDF copy of Dead City is available in the NIF shop plus so many other cool comics! AND you can still watch my talk “RSS & You” I hope I can convince some folks to give RSS a shot. All the talks are available even after NIF is over on the youtube channel.

June Schedule

Here’s June’s schedule as I try and keep it fairly consistent!

Tuesday is webcomics day, $1+ patrons get early access 2 months before pages go up on Topaz Comics for free
Wednesday is Grab Bag day, $5+ patrons
Every other Thursday are Private Collector NSFW posts, $10 patrons
Friday is for fun illustrations, $1+ patrons also get early access before a month before I post them free online

Other Things

Max and I will be ‘tabling’ at the online convention Citrus Con! I’ll update you with info as it comes out but we’ll have some sales going on for comics and commissions that weekend.

Commissions are still open for the foreseeable future! I want to draw things for you!

I’m also looking for some freelance work, if you or anyone you know is the market for a comic or character artist hit me up.

Photography corner will return!

~~~
Whoa, what a month! Onwards into June and THE SUMMER!
Updates
Digital illustration made to look like a black and white photograph. Lupin is leaning over something with his mouth open as if he's speaking, he's cropped in a way that we can see a little of his eyes and below. Jigen is in the background wearing a newsboy cap, a jacket and t-shirt, we can tell he's younger here. The two are in a dark storage room from the little we can see of the dark background.
“August 1967, found Gramps’ camera”
Now that The Curtain Falls has wrapped up (please go read it) today starts a new Lupin project I’ve been working on for a while called “Treasures of Time” This will be a pretty large illustration set themed around square photos taken by Lupin and co.
I want to get better at illustrations so I thought this would be a fun way to think about interactions and stories within a single piece. They won’t be in any particular order and I don’t have a set number in mind to end at so I’ll draw them until I run out of ideas. They’ll go up every Wednesday for $5+ up folks and I may pick some to post publicly to promo it (like this one). All patreon posts will come with a sketch and thumbnail. So join me on this photo journey because I’m really proud of it so far~
Two traditionally drawn illustrations on one image, both with black ink. A bust of Lupin the Third smiling and looking to the left. Jigen grinning while smoking and looking to the right.
Back when CanadaPost went on strike I had two shop orders in limbo the whole time and as thanks for their patience (I did offer a refund but they both wanted to wait) I doodled them each a drawing. I always forget to take photos of the doodles I do for Patrons in shop orders but I remembered these ones!
*Ohyeah patrons get a doodle in any book they order btw~
**But Canada Post might go on strike again today so we’ll see if I’ll be able to send out orders at all
Promo image, with the Topaz Comics logo at the top in browns and warm gold tones. Under it reads "Queer comics by a queer duo" and the link topazcomics.com below that are four floating heads with comic titles logos above them. The first is Mikael and JP from Dead City, the second is Jey from Gender Slices, the third is Darumaka from Alola Darumaka, and the last is Jigen from our one-shots.
Happy Webcomic Day!
I’ll be posting throughout the day on social media, but for you here’s the big full post.
Want to read some queer comics written and drawn by some queer folks for free?! I’m Jey Pawlik, and with my spouse Max Parker, we’ve got hundreds of pages in our archive, like the post-apocalyptic gay romance Dead City, the nonbinary autobio series Gender Slices, a 4-koma comedy comic about Darumaka and Lupin III fancomics.
The Alola Darumaka Process
Comic page split into four quadrants showing the sketch, inks, colours, and halftone effects on an Alola Darumaka page. The comic itself is four panels done in black line art with four shades of dusty pink. Panel one shows Darumaka sitting and doodling on a piece of paper with an Alolan Meowth napping behind her, Darumaka is humming with a little music note beside her. Panel two, Darumaka is still drawing and another Meowth has appeared behind her and is napping. Panel three, Darumaka has her hands up saying "Hey!" as a Meowth lays down in front of her and on her drawing. Panel four, Darumaka still with her hands up looks angrier saying "Gah!" as she is now surrounded by Meowths napping around her, heat lines coming off her body which just gathers more Meowths to her.
Here’s my process for Alola Darumaka using the ScreentonesCast template showing my traditional sketch, digital inks, colours, and halftone effects.
Dead City
The book cover "Dead City", drawn with choppy black line art and coloured with greens, blacks and yellows, showing Mikael and JP kneeling next to one another holding their own backpack straps with a dark Toronto skyline behind them as the sun sets. The bottom reads "Michelle Parker and Jey Pawlik"Comic page done in thick black ink and one solid 50% grey tone. Panel one, Mikael is walking over to the couch and JP asks "Are you okay?" and Mikael responds "Yeah?". Panel two, Mikael has sat down on the couch, wine glass in hand. JP asks "Are you drunk?", and Mikael replies "YESS!" Panel three shows a medium close up of JP saying "Isn't that a bad idea with all the zombies around?" Panel four is a close up of Mikael's drunk but smiling face, he says "You didn't mind last time" a bit seductively. Panel five is a similar shot but a close up of JP's face saying "But-- we should still be careful." Panel six pulls out and shows both boys on the couch together. Mikael saying "It's been ages since we saw one and they're all slow and clumsy now." JP says "Now?" Panel seven shows just Mikael from the waist up holding his wine glass saying "Right, you weren't out at the beginning."
Comic page done in thick black ink and one solid 50% grey tone. Panel one, a flashback to Mikael hunkered down in his dark messy apartment as the TV is the only source of light and narration reads “There used to be a lot and they were fast and violent.” Panel two, present day Mikael and he’s happily saying “But since they’re dead they rot, right?”. Panel three, flashback again to Mikael out in a dark warehouse where he’s searching through boxes. Narration reads “One time I was out looking for food” the sentence is left hanging over panel four, which shows a scared Mikael looking over his shoulder and the sound effect “Wok!” above his head.Comic page done in thick black ink and one solid 50% grey tone. Panel one, a continuation of the previous page’s flashback where Mikael is face to face with a zombie who’s decomposing and slowly meanering passed him, not noticing him at all. The narration reads “and one walked right past me! It didn’t have any eyes.” Panel two, back to the present showing Mikael lounging on the couch with JP next to him. JP asks “So the ones now are all rotted?” and Mikael smiles saying “Right!” Panel three, a close up of JP pouring himself a glass of wine on the coffee table in front of the couch while he says “Alright.”
Dead City is a completed post-apocalypse gay romance comic that focuses more on survival and human connection than the zombie aspect of the genre. Written by Max, this was our first comic project that we started in 2013 and finished in 2020! It’s still available to read online, but a newer fancy version was made into a book last year.
