Public October Art

I post something publicly every Friday (and sometimes extras) and these can be seen & shared on my various socials: tumblr, twitter, mastodon, cohost, pillowfort, bluesky and jpawlik.com/blog with sketches and thumbnails up early for patrons and for free members 2 months later.

My Ghost Files piece appeared on the Ghost Files Debrief on October 27th and that was super cool!

Webcomic Updates

I finished posting my 7 page comic “Loom”. This is a silent comic written by Clark Moreau for the Twisting Time Anthology.

Now that Loom is complete, I’m posting a short Lupin III comic that Michelle and I did for the fanzine “Between Heists” collection. Two pages are up already and there’s two more to go, updates Tuesdays at 12pmEST

Start reading it here

The Grab Bag tier on Patreon got a few more pages of my Lupin III fancomic “The Curtain Falls”, a comic about Lupin in his 60s. Pages go up when I finish them but it’s usually every other Wednesday.

Read the newest pages here

The Private Collector tier on Patreon also got another “After All” page, a NSFW Jigen/Zenigata comic written by Michelle. It’s heatin’ up in here!

October’s Sketchbook

This month’s sketchbook is HERE for the Grab Bag tier on Patreon

October’s sketchbook is pretty big this month at a whopping 30 pages! I’m only now coming back up to my full art potential after hurting my wrist last year. This month’s PDF includes a work life drawing session, lots of Makas in Halloween costumes, and some item concepts for a new original comic Michelle and I have been brainstorming! Plus, of course, some very good shoutout requests from my Private Collector folks!

MCX 2023

The Mississauga Comic Expo is BACK and happening on November 19th this year at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga! It’s free to enter, and Michelle and I will be there as Topaz Comics with all our books and wares!

I’ll be doing a sketch challenge in the theatre at 11am, and then my newest talk “Creating Comic Anthologies and Fanzines” at 1:30pm in the same theatre! Come visit us (booth number TBA)

Other things

– November 5th is my birthday! 33 babeeeeey
– I started HRT after years of debating. Comics are in the works!
– I recovered from covid and it doesn’t look like there’s been any long term side effects for me. I was pretty worried and anxious about that.

~~~
Talk to y’all again at the end of November!
Updates
A drawing done with black line work and blue toned textured colouring. The text “The Unscratchable” at the top of the drawing done in black and dark green. Shane Madej is standing triumphantly in front of a spooky black whole in a decrepit brick wall. Around him are easter eggs to Buzzfeed Unsolved and Ghost Files including, a raccoon with glowing eyes, a bat, a pigeon, Timmy’s blue ball, Ryan’s name, I love pot, Night Time Dan wuz here, a drawing of a goat, the Watcher logo, and the Boo Buddy. In the bottom left corner shows Ryan in a circular panel looking annoyed and saying “Shane…”
Hey I did some Ghost Files skeptic fanart and it appeared on the show!
This was really fun to work on and, as a skeptic myself, I wanted to do up a piece for our side of the show with a bunch of reasons for noises, shapes and glowing eyes. The raccoon is 100% a reference to S2 ep1.
Also check out my Patreon for the sketch & thumbnail of this piece for free
Comic page, 2 panels. Panel 1 shows a young Lupin and Jigen, where Jigen is facing the left and angrily bending himself forward while Lupin is behind him worried and reaching a hand out. Jigen’s yelling “Lupin! I’m gay! …okay?”. Panel 2 shows an open panel with no borders or background, a shoulder up shot of Lupin’s concerned face. Lupin says “So?”
Comic with four panels, done in black and white with halftones. Panel one shows a young Jigen with his back to the camera and his shoulders tense. He says “So…?” Panel two, a larger panel with a close up shot of his face as he turns around and looks to the right, his expression is pained and there’s a tear in his eye. He yells “Doesn’t that bother you?!” Panel three is a wide panel with young Lupin in the center from the shoulders up. He’s mad as Jigen accuses him. He says “No. Should it?” Panel four is an open panel of the two boys looking at each other from a side view. Jigen is leaning back away, while Lupin leans in closer with a determined and expectant expression.Comic with three panels, done in black and white with halftones. Panel one floats atop a big open panel. Young Jigen is startled and unsure of himself, he says “N-no…” Panel two is a big open panel with no borders or backgrounds, it shows a confident young Lupin with his hands on his hips and his eyes closed. He says “I mean my grandpa is into guys too, you know. So I know what’s up!” Panel three is a big wide panel with Jigen in the center from the waist up. He’s blushing and looking down and to the left with his shoulders by his ears, still a bit tense, but smiling now. He says “Uhh, yeah. Okay. Cool.”
An idea I’ve had for a while, even before Zero, but after Zero came out I thought that’d be the perfect way to present the idea.
This page in particular, the dialogue has been floating around in my head for probably well over a year now.
Also testing out TrueGrit’s halftone machine on this comic and… I gotta say y’all, I kinda love it! I’ve been wanting to do more halftone work but haven’t been able to find a look I like or a method that fits well with my workflow.
